with a focus on the causes and effects on psychosocial well-being.though it was to be a simple research, the results pointed to a multilayered set of challenges facing modern-day parents. it became apparent that there were serious struggles with regard to parenting besides other strives involving unfaithfulness in marriage, divorce, grieving, out-of-wedlock pregnancies, emotional and mental problems, substance abuse and addictions, stress/depression, financial problems, food, work, housing and medicine, the burden of hiv/aids, gender violence among others. as a matter of urgency, the juggernaut needed to be checked. he pushed the debate through circles of friends, churches and other forums whether formal or informal. at the beginning of 2012, he shared with likeminded individuals and a board was constituted to steer the effort through a structured forum.as a result, (i.a.f)was registered in kenya on 8th july 2012 under non-governmental organizations coordination act. since then,i.a.f has been active in providing trainings to individuals and groups, family therapy as well as research and publications. in 2016,iaf noted the saddening state of alcohol and drug abuse and subsequent addictions in kenya. the effects on families were deplorable with far reaching effect on economic and psychosocial stability.children and adults alike were wasting way. there was negative effect on health amongst users. this was affecting individual and community productivity, performance in schools and responsibility at home. it was also draining family resources contributing to poverty and disrupting agricultural production thereby leading to decline in food security. similarly, it was contributing to violence and criminality in both rural and urban setting as well as in institution of learning. the affect on individual’s perception of risk was pointed to beleading users to risky sexual behavior exposing them to hiv/aids and stis. i.a.f embarked on a journey to address the apparent problem through a double pronged approach. the first one is through prevention and second one is through treatment. this led to a need for a resource center where there would be alcohol and drug rehabilitation center as well as coordination and distribution of resources necessary for prevention of abuse. family education program: the program provides empowerment through education on contextualized parenting among different members of the society in contemporary africa. this is backed by advocacy on protection of children’s rights, prevention of gender based violence and information services on reproductive health. research and publication program: through the program,iaf carries out research on emerging trends andcontemporary issues affecting families. the output is aimed at informing policy making, policy reviews and programming by governments and other family oriented actors. family therapy program: the program provides psychosocial counseling to members of the family. at the core are specialized and individualized counseling services. we stand with family whose members are faced by social and/or psychological problems and work towards reversing the effects of the condition. family support program: through the program iaf provides practical support to families to enhance their wellbeing. there is a special focus to help the less advantaged who are suffering from addiction to access treatment. in addition, i.a.f. provides psychosocial support and other necessary interventions to the affectedfamilies. when the center is fully functional,
